Here’s the hot-and-cold dish on what happened tonight on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 1, episode 5!
  • Chan Ho Yin is a struggling busker who happens to be able to conjure fire with his hands.
  • While performing a mediocre magic show, he is watched by woman in a fetching white dress patterned with black flowers.
  • The woman sees him conjure fire and, appearing awed by his skill, introduces herself as Raina.
  • At his apartment, she tells him he has a gift and that she believes he was “chosen.”
  • But she apparently means “chosen to be kidnapped,” because then she kidnaps him with cleverly/impossibly concealed people in fireproof silver suits.
  • Coulson watches, satisfied, as Skye and Ward bond over a game of Battleship.
  • Ward sinks.
  • May inquires after Coulson’s excessive energy – she heard him puttering that morning because they are basically married – and offers to spar “like the old days.”
  • Coulson is saved by the alert on Chan’s abduction.
  • S.H.I.E.L.D. tracks and categorizes people with powers, which unnerves Skye.
  • And, for different reasons, Fitz.
  • Chan’s S.H.I.E.L.D handler shows them the fireproof material, and says that the list of specials was hacked by… the Rising Tide.
  • In China, Chan wakes up in captivity with the woman in the flower dress.
  • “I just want people to see what I can do,” he says.
  • Raina says she’ll make him a star, and that always ends well.
  • On the Bus, Skye is like “The hacker isn’t me!” and proves her innocence by tracing the hack to a famous hacktivist named Miles Langdon in Texas.
  • The team’s attempts to apprehend him prove futile when Miles pulls up a gridlock protocol from his phone, trapping Coulson’s jeep in traffic.
  • Skye manages to track Miles down… but clearly not in an official capacity.
  • They have sex, and shows him a microchip she has been hiding in her bra.
  • As you do.
  • (No, nobody does that.)
  • Skye looks for her clothes, and opens the porch door to Melinda May.
  • BAM.
  • Coulson grills Skye. (She’s dressed now, by the way.)
  • She says she and Miles are close, and that she hasn’t betrayed them.
  • Fitz feels betrayed that Skye didn’t tell him and Simmons about Miles.
  • Awww.
  • Ward coldly handcuffs Skye.
  • Back in China, Raina gives Chan a strengthening serum with “impressive” results. Almost immediately, he is able to produce a huge fireball in his hands.
  • Chan is totally into it and hurls fireballs because it’s fun.
  • Maybe it is, we don’t know.
  • In the Bus’s interrogation room, Skye argues with Miles; she’s started to approve of S.H.I.E.L.D’s methods if it keeps people safe.
  • Coulson feels broken up about Skye’s betrayal; May says she’s still hiding something.
  • FitzSimmons finally pull up the well-hidden dirt on Miles.
  • Ward lays out the info in the interrogation room; Miles was paid a cool million by the girl in the flower dress to hack the Chinese S.H.I.E.L.D feed.
  • Skye is furious.
  • Miles thinks it’s not a big deal – all it led to was an ecological site studying centipedes.
  • Which is actually Centipede.
  • LIKE FROM THE PILOT.
  • DUN DUN DUN.
  • Back in China, Mike Patterson’s benevolent doctor turns up in Raina’s facility.
  • It seems that Miles can process the Extremis well because of his superpower genetics.
  • Or something.
  • The doctor muses that it’s a good thing no one will ever call Chan “Scorch.”
  • And yeah, okay, we agree.
  • She congratulates Raina and leaves, telling her to “drain him.”
  • Raina promptly gasses Chan into unconsciousness like she’s just lost a boring video game.
  • Chan is aghast to find himself tied to a table and having his platelets drained.
  • He conjures fire but burns himself, because they drained his fire-resistant platelets.
  • Couslon apologizes to Ward – in that not-apologizing way – about bringing Skye aboard. Coulson and May will handle the rescue.
  • “My problem. I fix it,” he says.
  • Skye rails at Miles for selling out. “I risked everything to help you,” she says.
  • Miles wanted them to do their hactivist work, minus the poverty so Skye could “find what [she's] looking for,” without having to join icky S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • Skye isn’t impressed.
  • Coulson, May, and Agent Kwan break into the Centipede building through the roof, but it goes bad when Chan injects himself with the Centipede serum and kills Agent Kwan.
  • May tries to talk Chan down, but he says he’s a prisoner of S.H.I.E.L.D just as much as he is of Centipede.
  • Also he’s really started to like the name “Scorch.”
  • The building goes on lockdown and Skye and Ward go in to save Mom and Dad.
  • Fitz’s night-night gun doesn’t work against Chan’s fire!
  • Skye does something with a computer and the doors open.
  • The doctor begs for mercy, but Chan burns her to a crispity-crisp.
  • May ninjas in and stabs him with something – Extremis? – and she and Coulson book it.
  • Miles hacks the building’s mainframe and creates a path to channel Chan’s explosion.
  • Coulson, May, Ward, and Skye all race out of the building as Chan’s fireball blooms in the night sky.
  • Coulson drops Miles in Hong Kong with an anti-electronic bracelet.
  • Ha ha.
  • Skye tells Miles she’s going to stay if they let her; he tells her he hopes she finds what she’s looking for.
  • May and Ward drink together, and he refuses to face Coulson with Skye.
  • In Coulson’s office, Coulson chews Skye out for her deception.
  • “You have a secret, Skye, and one chance to come out with it…” or Coulson is done with her.
  • Skye pulls out the microchip. “It’s everything I have… on me,” she says.
  • She became a hacker to find everything she could on her parents.
  • Her search led her to a single document – redacted – by S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • Coulson offers her a Miles-bracelet, and she clicks it on as he leaves the room.
  • In the tag, Raina – again in a flowery dress – meets with an older man in prison.
  • Stage two is beginning, and she asks him to talk to “the clairvoyant” to see if any insights can be made on “stage three.”
  • He likes her dress.
