Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.: How Did Agent Coulson Survive?

How was Clarke Gregg’s fan-favorite doomed character Agent Coulson resurrected for ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
Well, you won’t learn the answer to that burning question in the show’s first episode. You getsome of the answer. But not everything right away.
“I thought they were pranking me a little bit because there was so much blood on the set ofThe Avengers,” said Gregg while on the carpet of EW and ABC’s party in New York City on Tuesday. “I kept waiting to see, are we going to shoot a version where [Loki] misses? And they didn’t, so I was really surprised to get that call and I wanted to make sure it didn’t do anything to undermine what we achieved there and when [writer-director Joss Whedon] explained the mystery and how they planned to deal with it, with Agent Coulson being around, I was very sold.”
Asked specifically how Coulson comes back, Gregg said: “He’s back. He’s thinks he knows how he’s back. We’ll have to see.”
But even brought back from the dead once to star in S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t have Gregg feeling too cocky — Whedon could always kill him again. “I have a feeling if they killed me off again it would be for good so I’m very careful to read the end of the script every time I get one. It’s like getting struck by lightning. I kind of hope it hits somebody else first before it comes back to me.”
Gregg added: “Agent Coulson represents the people who don’t have superpowers, the guys who actually can be killed — or at least seem to be and yet come back sometimes … Marvel has such a lock on how to do really incredibly visual affects and stunts that we’ve got stuff on our show that I just don’t think we’ve seen on TV before.”
Added co-star Chloe Bennet about the appeal of the show: “If you love The Avengers, if you love any of Joss Whedon’s work, you’re going to absolutely love the show. It’s about these people living in a super world dealing with being human. You see these superhero movies and you see the superheroes struggle but you don’t see how humans do in a world like that. That’s what will draw people in. It’s so human. And it’s so super and awesome still.”
Interview: Clark Gregg About Agent Coulson's Return On Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Clark Gregg, 'Trust Me' Star, Opens Up About Agent Coulson's Return In 'Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.'
"I felt pretty dead" is how Clark Gregg remembers the last time he played Agent Phil Coulson, in the 2012 summer blockbuster "Marvel's The Avengers." Of course, feeling dead and being dead are two different things, especially in the Marvel universe.
As it turns out, Coulson wasn't quite dead yet. Gregg (as Coulson) will headline the new "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." television series this fall, which Gregg spoke about in detail -- well, at least as much detail as the always secretive Marvel would allow -- in our chat this past weekend.
But, first, Gregg is at New York's Tribeca Film Festival in support of "Trust Me," a movie that he wrote, directed and starred in. He plays Howard, a low-rent former child star who now specializes in representing child stars. Howard lucks out when he discovers Lydia (13-year-old newcomer Saxon Sharbino), who just may be the next big thing -- but who also may take Howard down a dark path he never envisioned.
I met Gregg in a very crowded Manhattan hotel lobby -- so crowded that Gregg suggested we take some chairs outside, because a Manhattan sidewalk was better suited for an interview than the "zoo" of that lobby. Along with the understandably shy but delightful Sharbino, we discussed "Trust Me," the return of Agent Coulson and how Gregg was almost in "The Untouchables."
"Trust Me" has a tonal shift I wasn't expecting.

I thought I was writing a goofy comedy about the business ...
Is that really how it works? Then it becomes something else at the end?
I mean, I don't feel like it changes at the end. I feel like there's a gradually evolving darker component. But, yeah, it came blazing out of me, and I realized when I read it back, "Oh, this is different." This is representative of my ambivalent feelings that I have about Hollywood and about kind of the distorted concept of stardom. Especially in this celebrity-obsessed moment.

Interview: Clark Gregg Talks Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. And More
Clark Gregg Talks S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series, the Return of Agent Coulson and How It’ll be Explained, Could He Be in Future Marvel Movies, and More

“Coulson Lives”. Clark Gregg, who has been doing terrific work throughout his career, finally found a devoted fan following for his beloved performance as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson. A minor character who still managed to steal scenes with only a few lines, Coulson really got to stand out in The Avengers, and his death left fans reeling. Then a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series was announced, and it turned out Coulson wasn’t quite so dead after all. Fans rejoiced, and while a pilot for the show has been filmed, details are still scarce. Now that Coulson is back in the world of the living, Gregg spoke with Steve at WonderCon about joining the TV series, how it will explain Coulson’s return, working with a smaller budget, and if Coulson will come back to the movies. Hit the jump for what he had to say.
Gregg found his exit from the Marvel Universe to be bittersweet when Coulson was killed off, and while he would have loved to make that death less-than-permanent, he never took talk of a resurrection seriously until Joss Whedoncame calling:I’ve been so happy and living this geek fantasy as they kept adding Agent Coulson to everything including The Avengers and then gave him this magnificent, almost Shakespearean death scene, and I found out on that day how much I loved this guy and had come to identify with him partly because of the way fans responded to him, and also because he had such a great niche in those movies. He got to be funny, he got to be, in this case, heroic. And then I got to say good-bye to him, and it was a very emotional day. And yet I feel what Joss did with that was a fantastic conclusion of the character. And even though my friends at Marvel said, “You know, we spent a lot of time talking about how Coulson lives, and we know that there’s a movement out there, and there are t-shirts and people paint on bridges ‘Coulson Lives’, we’re going to bring you back”, and it’s one of the many things people tell you that never ever happens. And then I get this call from Joss saying, “Well…there’s a script. And here’s what we’re thinking, and it’s after The Avengers, and here’s the concept.” By the time Joss finished telling me, I was in.
